Starting the journey seemed a bit daunting, but in retrospect, a pretty easy brew from True Brew Kits. This was a great first brew for the hop head, which we kind of are (although really not that hoppy). It’s good to start with a style you enjoy, so even if you screw it up, you should still find some pleasure. Our friends like it, or maybe it was the sweet logo they liked.

Beer Label Pale AleIngredients

  • Hopped Light Malt Extract – 3.3 lbs
  • Light Dried Malt Extract – 2 lbs
  • Crystal Malt Grains – 6 oz
  • Hop Pellets – 1 oz (no clue what kind)
  • Ale Yeast – 1 pack
  • Priming Sugar – 5oz

Brew Stats

  • OG: 1.043 – 1.045
  • FG: 1.0010 – 1.012
  • HBU: 13.0
  • 5.52% ABV

Instructions

  • Boil 1–1 ½ gallons
  • Turn heat off, submerge/steep grains for 20-30 minutes
  • Return to boil
  • Remove from heat, stir in pellets and malt extract
  • When materials dissolve, return to boil. Continue boiling and removing from heat until foaming stops
  • Boil 20 – 30 minutes
  • Transfer to fermenting vessel, top off with cold water to make 5 gallons
  • Cool to below 90 F, take hydrometer reading (most are made to read accurate at 60F)
  • Pitch the yeast and stir
  • Ferment for approximately a week and bottle
  • Transfer to new container and add priming sugar (boil with 1 cup water)
  • Cool in dark cool place for approximately 3 weeks
